This is done for prediction among the Lhoba people. The liver is taken out to check its color, shape and condition of its blood vessels. Obscured blood vessels are a bad omen. Some observe eggs, which are cooked and chewed. Chewed eggs are spread over banana leaves. Prediction is made according to the size of the chewed yolk.
Burying the dead up a tree is a way unique to the Lhoba people. The dead person is tied up in a foetal position. The body will be put into a rattan basket, which will be hung up in a tree. Legend has it that its soul will go direct to Paradise and soon be reincarnated.
The head is wrapped in a white cloth, and its face covered by a wooden mask. Food and fruit are spread in front of it. The person who is to move the body away holds a gourd in his hand and pours water out of it behind his back.
Lamas chant sutras to redeem the sins of the dead, and make seven human figurines out of maize dough and seven tigers out of wheat dough, which are put in front of the rattan basket.
The family members mourn the departed for three days running. Each relative or friend will produce a route map with 22 kinds of designs for the dead person to take, and say:"We have done our best to save you, but we have failed. Don't be sad to walk alone. What is important is to choose the best way to the Paradise. Go ahead! Don't be sad!"
