Choma was born in Zetang County in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Zetang is known as the birthplace of Tibetan Culture, and it is a place of blue skies, white clouds, and mystical temples. The women there wear ornate dresses, and the bronze-skinned men sing aloud on the rangelands. As a child, Choma enjoyed the dancing and singing of the adults, and she dreamed of being a dancer one day.
At 12, Choma entered the children's class of the Dance Department of the Central University for Nationalities. In 1982, she became a member of the Song and Dance Troupe of the Tibet Autonomous Region. In 1986, she again entered the Dance Department of the Central University for Nationalities, and after graduation, she became a teacher there. In 1993, she put on a solo dance recital in Beijing and met with great success.
Choma's performances are full of passion and show her extraordinary gift for art. Her dances also express her feelings. Qomolangma shows the magnificence of mountains, The Yarlung Zangbo River demonstrates the greatness of that river, Morning Song expresses the wishes of a young girl, Mother describes the kindness of a mother, and Fireplace displays the lives of Tibetan people. Choma, with her unique understanding and imagination, has created many unforgettable artistic figures on stage and is now famous as a shining star in Tibetan dance.
Choma shuns ornate poses in her performances, preferring to give full play to the simple and plain essence of Tibetan dance through exaggerated postures. "Her performances often move me to tears," says one of her fans.
Choma is a follower of Buddhism, so she is often quiet in daily life. She believes that it is love that links one person to another, and she treats everyone and everything around her with kindness. "I'm lucky," says Choma. "I do what I love, and many people care for me, so I should present my love to them."
Choma is now writing down her understanding of dance. She believes that dance is an extension of language and that it is the most honest and heartfelt of all endeavors.
