The Forty-Three Projects Undertaken With State Investments

In the spring of 1984, the Central Government decided to undertake 43 projects in Tibet with aid from nine provinces and municipalities directly under the Central Government, including Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu Province and Zhejiang Province. These projects included 18 that were to be undertaken in Lhasa, such as the repair of the Western Suburb Market, the Northern Suburb Market, and the Materials Supply Station; construction of the three-star Lhasa Hotel and the Tibet Hotel; construction of the Tibet University, the Lhasa TV Education Building, the Lhasa Center of Activities for Children, the Lhasa Theater, the Mass Art Palace, and the Tibet Gymnasium; construction of the In-Patient and the Out-Patient Departments of the Tibet Autonomous Regional Hospital; and renovation of the Lhasa Thermal Power Station. In the meantime, several water works were built or renovated; Lhasans no longer had to line up for drinking water by the river or wells. These buildings added color to nearby Potala Palace and the Jokhang Monastery, giving the ancient city some modern tones. Tibetan people hail the 43 aid projects as the 43 monuments to modern life.
