| The Bagyai Reserve for the Giant Cypress in Nyingchi |
|
The giant cypress, also called Yarlung Zangbo cypress, is a species peculiar to Tibet. On the slope southwest of the Bajie Village at over 40 kilometers west to Nyingchi County is a green, luxuriant forest of giant cypresses. The largest tree is over 2,500 years old, 50 meters high, and 18 meters thick. Local people regard it as a divine tree. This giant cypress forest records a natural history of several thousand years, and is highly valuable in the studies of plants, climate, geographical and geological conditions, hydrology, air pollution and human activities during the past millennia. |
