This land is also home to a variety of animals. The predominant domesticated animals include the yak, ox, pienniu (hybrid offspring of a bull and a female yak), horse, donkey, goat, sheep, pig and chicken. Living in the sub-tropical and warm forest on the southern slopes of the Himalayas are tens of varieties of wild animals, including the small panda, long-tail monkey, wild bull, brown bear, black bear, leopard, macaque, boar, river deer and wild cat. Living near the snowbelt are the snow leopard and the blue sheep. On the plateau north of the Himalayas live some 100 species of animals, such as the wild yak, wild donkey, blue sheep, gazelle, Mongolian gazelle, argali, fox, wild rabbit, river deer, wild wolf, lynx and marmot. About 200 species of birds also live here, including the Tibetan snow pheasant, cinereous vulture, black-necked crane, wild duck, fish gull, eagle with stripe head, red-beak gull, red-beak bird, brown-head bird, sunbird, tit, wild pigeon, turtledove and sparrow. Among the animals and birds, the wild yak, the wild donkey, the Tibetan gazelle, the blue sheep, the snow leopard and the black-necked crane are Class A animals under state protection. Xigaze is a land of crisscrossing rivers and lakes, with rich fishing resources. The Yarlung Zangbo and the Nyang Qu rivers have a considerable number of fish reserves, consisting mainly of fishes with thick skin, fat meat and few bones. All taste delicious. The Yadong salmon yielded in the Yadong River is known as a rare species.
